Smarter Recruits Or Poor Work Ethics

More and more college graduates are in search of the perfect job but what it the perfect job considered to be for the young and and fresh out of college graduate. Well there was a new survey taken by business week that is highlighting the 50 best places to launch a career. Rather surprisingly to me at least probably not to those people that perhaps work for this company but the entertainment giant that is Disney was listed as the number one place to start a career.

When you consider the global reach that the Disney company has with movies, theme parks and television you can start to realize that it would be in the best interest of the company to make the up and coming youthful workforce a priority with the goal of getting the best and brightest in to their stable. The survey found that the number one priority for young professional is a more balanced life not the grueling hours that perhaps they watched their parents worked. So many of the top companies in the survey have adjusted their time away from work offerings accordingly that means more vacation time from the start. Other means of companies offering a way to establish a more balanced life is through scheduling, flex time, comp time and telecommuting.

Other top priorities that these top companies have targeted as a way to entice the best of the best into their companies. Advancement within the company through on the job training as well as offering internships to put them on the fast track to working within the company right after graduation. The other ingredient to enticing new recruits and of course the most obvious one is the money, show me the money and the top companies are doing just that to get the best of the best recruits.

Of course with all the focus on getting a more “balanced life” this tactic does act as a double edged sword as a lot of the established workers and executives see a lot of the new generation as slackers not wanting to put in their time and having a “poor work ethic.” What are your thoughts on the work ethic of the new generation of college grads are they simply being smarted about their value as a new employee and demanding a more “balanced life” is the right thing to do. Or should they put their heads down and grind it out and earn the privileges that so many before them have worked many years to earn? Please share your opinions and thanks for reading.
