There is a new and ready to work work force out there that just need a little training. I am not speaking of the youth of today either. I am referring to the baby boomers who were planning on retiring and due to the economies standing have decided against retirement and are looking to start a second career in a whole new field. This is not just happening here in the US either this is happening all over the world where the baby boomer demographic of the general population is not ready to retire.
There is actually a number of reasons why this is happening more and more and not all of them have to do with financial situations. So let’s look at some of the reasons why more and more people are working beyond their “retirement years”. A big reason to start with is the one I mentioned already the money situation has become quite sticky for a lot of us in the last few years with prices on everything going up at a very alarming rate sometimes. Either poor planning or the unfortunate bottom dropping out of the market and peoples retirement funds is a big part of it.
Health, the over all health of people in general is getting better. People are living or at least trying to live healthy lifestyles and it’s starting to show as the median age for how old people live to keeps on rising. Reaching 100 is not such an uncommon feat anymore. So retiring at 65 when you are still in good health and the odds are in your favor to live possibly another 30 years, retirement does not look all that appealing.
The perception of retirement, retirement is not viewed the same way it was even 20 years ago. Retirement now a days is often looked at as an ending or to some even death. I know that might seem harsh but a lot of people view retirement that way. So what is the alternative? Baby boomers are going back to school in record numbers to learn new skills or improve upon the ones they already have. Many are starting second or all new careers in totally new fields. What ever they decide to do the baby boomer generation is redefining what it means to retire or not retire.
